Why Just Standing Isn’t Enough: Movement Matters for a Healthier Workday

At a recent Orgatec, companies kept saying, “sitting is the new smoking.” There’s truth to this: long hours of sitting can lead to health problems like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. But what’s the real solution? Some believe standing desks are the answer. But new research from the University of Sydney suggests it’s not that simple.
This large study, involving over 83,000 people, found that standing desks alone may not lower the risk of heart disease and could even increase certain health issues. Prolonged standing was linked to issues like varicose veins and dizziness, and standing for hours didn’t reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke. The results showed that people who sat for over ten hours a day faced a higher risk of heart disease, but standing more didn’t solve the problem either.
So what does work? The study’s authors say it’s not about choosing to sit or stand—it’s about moving regularly throughout the day. Incorporating short walks, stretches, and light activity can break up long periods of sitting or standing, supporting better health overall.
Sitflexx aligns with this movement-first approach. By giving you a way to stay active at your desk, it helps to keep circulation going and supports a healthier, more flexible workspace.
